EASA Training Programs

The EASA Aircrew Regulation 1178/2011 Part-FCL .705 requires that all pilots must hold a valid type rating for a specific helicopter type, to be able to exercise the privileges of pilot in command on that type.

A helicopter type rating can be added to any EASA helicopter license, and this is usually done as a separate training course specific to the type, comprising of groundschool and flight training to become familiar with the handling and operational characteristics of the type.

A type rating skills test with an EASA examiner is required on the type on completion of the course, which will include both an oral ground exam and a license skills test on type.

It is possible to complete a type rating during training towards a license, for example a student training for an EASA PPL(H) can also include additional type ratings during their training course. In these circumstances the student would need to take the PPL(H) license skills test on a type on which they have a minimum of 35 hours of training, and a separate type rating skills test on the additional types on which they have received training.

The EASA PPL(H) would then be issued with type ratings for the types on which the student has successfully passed the skills tests, allowing them to exercise pilot in command privileges on those types.

Our training courses comprise 8 hours of groundschool and 5 hours of flight training, plus the type rating skills test, which is typically around 1 hour.
